Gudi Padwa is the beginning of a New Year

31st March 2014 is being celebrated as Gudi Padwa.  Gudi Padwa is the first day of the year by Maharashtrians and Konkanis. On this day, two festivals i.e. Gudi Padwa and Ugadi are celebrated. In Maharashtra, people celebrate as Gudi Padwa and in the State of Karnataka, this day is celebrated as Ugadi.



    


Gudi Padwa is Marathi New Year as per Luni-Solar Calendar. In Telugu, Gudi means Temple. Gudi Padwa is celebrated on the first day of the Chaitra month. This day is also celebrated as the first day of Chaitra Navratri and Ghatasthapana which is well known as Kalash Sthapana and it is done on this first day. On this day, people take oil bath and only after that they prayer.  In North India, on this day, nine days Navratri Puja begins.
